What size air conditioner do I need? (BTU by room size)

As a rule of thumb, allow roughly 300 BTU per m² — more if the room is sunny, poorly insulated or has large windows. Use the guide below:

Room size	Recommended cooling	Suggested De'Longhi Pinguino model
Small bedroom / office (up to ~20 m², 70 m³)	~8,000–9,000 BTU	PACES72 Compact (8,300 BTU)
Bedroom / medium living room (~20–28 m², 80 m³)	~9,000–10,000 BTU	PACEM82 (9,400 BTU) or PAC EX100 Silent (10,000 BTU)
  Large living room / open-plan (~28–44 m², 100–110 m³)	~11,000–11,500 BTU	AP98 GentleJet (11,500 BTU) or PACEL112CST Smart Wi-Fi (11,000 BTU)

Why choose a portable air conditioner?

  • No installation required: position the unit, attach the exhaust hose to a window, and enjoy instant cooling — no engineer, no drilling.
  • Room-to-room flexibility: move it where you need it — bedroom at night, living room by day.
  • Multi-function comfort: most models combine cooling, dehumidification and fan modes in one appliance.
  • Energy efficient: modern units use eco R290 refrigerant and smart thermostats to keep running costs low.
  • Smart features: programmable timers, sleep modes, remote controls, and on Wi-Fi models, app and voice control.

  Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install a portable air conditioner? No. Portable ACs only need a window to vent the exhaust hose. The included kit fits most window types — no drilling, no engineer, no landlord permission.

What BTU rating do I need? Match BTU to room size — around 300 BTU per m² as a guide. See the table above; size up if the room is sunny or poorly insulated.

Are these compatible with UK and EU electricity? Yes — all units operate at 220–240V / 50Hz, the standard for the UK and all EU countries.

Can I use a portable air conditioner in a bedroom? Yes. For quiet running, choose a Silent model such as the PAC EX100 Silent or the compact PACES72.

Do I have to empty the water? Most models feature auto-evaporation and expel condensation through the exhaust hose — no manual emptying in normal conditions. In very high humidity, occasional draining may be needed.
