Best Bialetti Moka Pots & Stovetop Espresso Makers UK 2026

The Bialetti Moka pot is the original stovetop espresso maker — a piece of Italian design that has made rich, aromatic coffee on the hob since 1933. It needs no pods, no electricity and no barista skills, just ground coffee, water and heat. This guide compares the full Bialetti range at Tiny Lux, explains how to choose the right one for your hob and household, and shows you how to brew the perfect cup.

How a Moka pot works

A Moka pot has three chambers: water in the base, ground coffee in the funnel-shaped middle basket, and the top chamber where your finished coffee collects. As the water heats, steam pressure pushes it up through the coffee grounds and into the top — producing a strong, espresso-style brew with deep flavour. It's quick, cheap to run, and endlessly satisfying.

How to choose a Bialetti Moka pot

  • Hob type: classic aluminium Moka pots (like the Moka Express) work on gas, electric and ceramic hobs. For an induction hob you need a stainless-steel model (Venus) or an induction-specific Moka — aluminium alone won't work on induction.
  • Cup size: Moka pots are sized in espresso-style "cups" (around 60ml each). A 3-cup suits one or two people; 6-cup is the family/regular size. Always brew a full pot for the best flavour.
  • Material: aluminium is light, traditional and heats fast; stainless steel is more durable, dishwasher-friendly and induction-ready.
  • Crema: if you want a frothy crema on top, the Mini Express and Brikka-style models are designed to deliver it.
  • Gifting: the hand-decorated Bialetti x Dolce&Gabbana editions make a stunning present.

How to make the perfect Moka pot coffee

  1. Fill the base with hot water up to the safety valve — starting with hot water avoids "cooking" the coffee.
  2. Fill the funnel basket with ground coffee (a medium-fine grind), levelled but not tamped.
  3. Screw together and place on a medium heat — low and slow gives smoother coffee.
  4. When you hear the gurgle and the top fills with coffee, take it off the heat. Stir and serve.
  5. Let it cool before washing; rinse with water only (no detergent) to protect the seasoned aluminium.

Pair it with a fresh Bialetti Perfetto Moka ground coffee for an all-Italian cup, and froth milk easily with the Bialetti Tuttocrema frother.

Moka pot FAQs

Will a Bialetti Moka pot work on an induction hob? Only the stainless-steel models — the Venus or the Moka Induction. Classic aluminium Moka pots need gas, electric or ceramic hobs.

What size should I buy? Moka "cups" are espresso-sized (~60ml). A 3-cup suits one or two people; a 6-cup is the regular family size. Brew a full pot for best results.

Is Moka coffee the same as espresso? It's espresso-style — strong and concentrated — but made at lower pressure than a pump espresso machine, so there's less crema (except on crema-focused models like the Mini Express).

Considering a machine instead? If you drink several coffees a day, a bean-to-cup machine may pay for itself surprisingly fast — see our bean-to-cup payback calculator and our best bean-to-cup guide.
