The Beginner's Guide to IPL: How It Works, What to Expect, and How to Get the Best Results

If you've heard about IPL hair removal but aren't sure exactly how it works, whether it will work for you, or what a treatment actually involves — this guide covers everything you need to know before you start.

What Is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It emits broad-spectrum pulses of light onto the skin, which are absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair shaft. The light converts to heat, travels to the hair follicle, and disrupts its ability to grow new hair. With repeated treatments, the follicle progressively stops producing hair — leaving skin smoother for longer after each session.

IPL is not the same as laser. Laser uses a single precise wavelength; IPL uses a filtered broad spectrum. Both target hair the same way, but laser is typically more powerful and used in clinics, while IPL is ideal for safe, effective home use.

Will IPL Work for Me?

IPL requires contrast between hair pigment and skin tone. It works best on dark hair against lighter skin, and works reasonably well on dark hair and medium-darker skin.

  • Works on: Dark blonde, brown, black hair — skin tones Fitzpatrick I–V
  • Does NOT work on: White, grey, light blonde, or red hair (insufficient pigment to target)
  • NOT safe for: Very dark skin (Fitzpatrick VI) — risk of skin absorbing the light

All Philips Lumea devices include an integrated skin tone sensor that automatically stops the device from flashing if your skin tone is outside the safe treatment range.

How Many Treatments Do You Need?

Hair grows in cycles — IPL is only effective on hairs in the active growth (anagen) phase. Multiple sessions spaced over weeks ensure every follicle is eventually treated during its active phase.

With the current Philips Lumea range: four initial sessions, once every two weeks (eight weeks total). Then monthly touch-up sessions to maintain results. After a complete course, many users go months between touch-ups.

Your First Treatment: Step by Step

Step 1 — Shave 24 Hours Before

Shave (don't wax or epilate) the area you plan to treat. The light targets the root inside the follicle, not the visible hair. Shaving removes surface hair so energy isn't wasted on it and reduces the risk of surface irritation.

Step 2 — Clean, Dry Skin

Remove any lotions, self-tan, or cosmetics from the treatment area. Anything on the skin's surface can interfere with light transmission.

Step 3 — Skin Tone Test

Press the device against your skin and let the sensor read your tone. It will indicate the appropriate intensity level — or refuse to flash if your skin is outside the safe range.

Step 4 — Start at a Low Intensity

Begin at intensity level 2 or 3 for your first session. Work up to higher settings over subsequent sessions as your skin acclimatises. Higher intensity = better results, but only within comfortable tolerance.

Step 5 — Treat Systematically

Use Slide & Flash mode for large areas (legs, arms, stomach). Use Stamp & Flash for smaller or curved areas (bikini, underarms, face). Work systematically for complete coverage.

Step 6 — Aftercare

Avoid direct sun exposure on treated areas for 24–48 hours. Moisturise if the skin feels sensitive. Between sessions, shave as needed — don't wax or epilate (which removes the root IPL needs to target).

What Results to Expect and When

Most users notice reduced hair density from the second or third treatment. By the fourth session, clinical studies show up to 92% hair reduction with Philips Lumea devices. Hair that does regrow tends to be finer and lighter. Consistency is critical — missing sessions significantly reduces the cumulative effect.

Common Questions

Does it hurt? Most people describe a mild warmth or tingling — significantly less painful than waxing.

Can I use it on my face? Yes, with the appropriate face attachment (smaller window + extra UV filter). Don't use a body attachment on the face.

How long do results last? With advanced devices like the Lumea 9900 Series, up to two years before a touch-up is needed.

Can I use IPL when pregnant? No. Consult your doctor before resuming after giving birth.

What about tattoos or dark moles? Never apply IPL directly over tattoos, dark moles, or birthmarks — cover them or avoid those areas.

Getting the Best Results

  • Stay consistent. Don't miss sessions — every gap breaks the treatment cycle.
  • Use the highest comfortable intensity. Higher settings deliver faster results within safe limits.
  • Shave between sessions, not wax. Waxing removes the root — exactly what IPL needs.
  • Protect treated skin from sun. Sun exposure before or after treatment increases irritation risk.
  • Use the app. The Philips Lumea IPL app provides structured scheduling and progress tracking.
